Igor Stravinsky. Music for the ballet "Orpheus"
"Stravinsky is the Orpheus of the 20th century," asserted choreographer George Balanchine. Perhaps this position led to the commission of a ballet of the same name from the composer.
The history of music is filled with numerous incarnations of this legendary figure, considered a symbol of musical art. Orpheus was heeded not only by men but also by the gods of Ancient Greece, and the lyre he played was a precious gift from the god Apollo.
In the post-war years, the pursuit of eternal truths was extremely relevant, so the image of Orpheus became a symbol of harmony, and art became the embodiment of humanism.
