Symphonic concert of the National Orchestra of Lille

The Orchestre National de Lille, conducted by Kazushi Ono, features works by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and Dmitri Shostakovich.

The overture to Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhäuser" summed up the opera's content and its main idea - the opposition of the spiritual and the sensual.

The "Four Last Songs" by Richard Strauss are the composer's final completed works. They were written in 1948, when Strauss was already 84 years old. Everything in them breathes with a premonition and expectation of inevitable death. The title "Four Last Songs" was given by Strauss's friend Ernst Roth, editor-in-chief of Boosey & Hawkes, when he published all four songs as a single whole in 1950 and in the order in which they are now performed: "Spring", "September", "Bedtime", "At Sunset". The songs are written to the poems of Hermann Hesse and Joseph Eichendorff.

Dmitri Shostakovich conceived the Sixth Symphony as a monumental one with features of an oratorio dedicated to V.I. Lenin. But this idea was never realized by the composer. The Sixth Symphony became completely different. It was first performed in Leningrad on November 5, 1939 by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Yevgeny Mravinsky.
