Shostakovich. Symphony of Cinema

The IV St. Petersburg Music Festival named after S.K. Gorkovenko is held in the Northern Capital from November 24 to December 23. Each year, the festival introduces listeners to new or little-known musical genres, encouraging a rethinking of well-known works.

This year, the program of the IV St. Petersburg Music Festival named after S.K. Gorkovenko is dedicated to several significant dates: the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the 80th anniversary of the Governor's Symphony Orchestra, founded on May 10, 1945; the 100th anniversaries of composer Veniamin Basner and theater and film actor Innokenty Smoktunovsky; the 120th anniversaries of directors Grigory Kozintsev, Alexander Faintsimer, and Leo Arnshtam; and the 185th anniversary of Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

On November 24, the festival opened on the stage of the St. Petersburg Capella with the program "Shostakovich." "Symphony of Cinema." The concert featured excerpts from music composed by Dmitri Shostakovich between the 1930s and 1970s for films by Friedrich Ermler, Sergei Yutkevich, Grigory Kozintsev, Leonid Trauberg, Sergei Gerasimov, Alexander Dovzhenko, Grigory Alexandrov, Leo Arnshtam, Grigory Roshal, Alexander Faintsimer, and Azerbayzhan Mambetov. Many of the excerpts included in the program were only made available to the public this year thanks to the release of Shostakovich's new collected works. These portions of the film scores were not included in the final versions of the films and will be performed for the first time. The world premiere included performances of musical pieces for the classic revolutionary trilogy by G. Kozintsev and L. Trauberg, "Maxim's Youth" - "Maxim's Return" - "Vyborg Side," for S. Yutkevich's film "Golden Mountains," for G. Alexandrov's drama "Meeting on the Elbe," for L. Arnshtam's film "Five Days, Five Nights," for the film "A Year Like a Life" by the A. Mambetov-G. Roshal duo, and for the biographical films "Sofya Perovskaya" and "Michurin."
