Carl Orff. Carmina Burana
The stage cantata "Carmina Burana" by the German composer Carl Orff was presented at the Ljubljana Festival in 2023 by the Slovenian National Theatre.
Carmina Burana - "Beuern Songs". This name is associated with the Benedictine monastery of Beuern, where the original manuscript of the collection was found. It includes 250 texts of medieval poems written in Latin, Old German and French.
After becoming acquainted with this collection, Carl Orff immediately conceived a new stage work with a choir and orchestra. For this, he selected 24 poems and wrote a libretto. This libretto includes poems in both Latin and Old German. It covers a wide range of secular themes relevant both in the 13th century and in our time: the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the transience of life, the joy of the return of spring and the pleasure of drunkenness, gluttony, gambling and carnal love.
The cantata was first performed on June 8, 1937 at the Old Opera in Frankfurt am Main.
This work is one of the most popular and is performed both in parts and in its entirety on stages all over the world.
