The Mermaid Opera

On August 30, 2024, at the Cathedral Square of the Astrakhan Kremlin, where, within the framework of the International Festival of Classical Art "Caspian Seasons - 2024", the premiere of the opera by composer A.S. Dargomyzhsky "Rusalka" based on the poem of the same name by A.S. Pushkin, timed to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the poet's birth, took place.

This is a production of the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theater under the direction of artistic director and chief conductor Valery Voronin, which was attended by leading soloists of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia, the State Academic Mariinsky Theater and the Moscow Theater "Novaya Opera" named after E.V. Kolobov.

Valery Voronin, musical director and conductor of the Rusalka Opera, noted that in the anniversary year of Alexander Pushkin, it was decided to present to the public a new genre of opera - a psychological domestic tragedy. The design of the stage area, unusual lighting effects and technical solutions, character costumes convey the atmosphere of Russian nature, national life and folklore.

The director of the play, the famous opera director Sergei Novikov, showed the Astrakhan residents a new reading of the immortal classics of the great Russian poet: "This is a new, unusual interpretation of The Mermaid, which no one has ever staged. There are many interesting discoveries waiting for the audience...".
