International Chamber Music Festival in the Tretyakov Gallery
The concert program is composed of works by composers with whom Diaghilev collaborated in one way or another in Paris. First place among his constant creative partners and associates belongs to Igor Stravinsky, whose name is associated with revolutionary breakthroughs in musical theatre, the loudest scandals, and the greatest triumphs of the Russian Seasons. For Diaghilev's enterprise, Stravinsky in particular wrote the ballet "Pulcinella", based on manuscripts by Italian composers of the 18th century, and later composed the Italian Suite for Violin and Piano from fragments of the ballet.
The Russian Seasons' playbills repeatedly featured works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, whether they were entire operas (like "The Golden Cockerel" in 1914) or scenes from them transformed into choreographic productions. Often, stand-alone symphonic scores, such as Rimsky-Korsakov's suite "Schéhérazade" or Richard Strauss's poem "The Merry Pranks of Til Ulenspiegel", which was favored by the choreographer and dancer Wenceslas Nijinsky, were also used as the basis for embodiment in dance.
Diaghilev also cooperated willingly with French contemporary composers, in particular from the group of the Six, which included Francis Poulenc. His ballet "Lani" was successfully staged by Diaghilev in 1924. Sergei Prokofiev wrote three unique ballets for Diaghilev - "The Tale of the Jester", "The Prodigal Son" and "The Steel Step" (an action about the proletariat, staged in constructivist settings). Among the innovative composers who did not write for the theatre, Diaghilev also held Scriabin in high esteem and promoted the performance of his symphonic music in Paris.
