Verbier 2023. S.Rachmaninov. Piano Concerto No. 1
The Verbier International Music Festival is a landmark event in classical music, which is held every year in the summer. Its main mission is to share experiences between great masters and young artists from all over the world. In 2023, the festival celebrated its 30th anniversary. The anniversary year program was more intense than ever.
Not one, but two famous conductors performed in this concert: Mikhail Pletnev handed over the baton to the great James Gaffigan and sat down at the piano to perform Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1.
This is the first major work by Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff in the genre of a piano concerto. It was written in 1890-1891, when the composer was 17-18 years old, while still a student at the Moscow Conservatory. The concert was dedicated to Alexander Ziloti, a pianist and conductor who supported the young composer. The work is filled with complex harmonies, virtuoso passages and soul-stirring melodies, thanks to which the Russian composer is so loved all over the world.
