X International Chamber Music Festival VIVARTE. Festival Opening

Description

The 10th International Chamber Music Festival VIVARTE opened at the Tretyakov Gallery on May 26 with a concert dedicated to Viktor Borisov-Musatov, one of the most striking and original Russian artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Researchers consider Borisov-Musatov's work to be a model of musicality in painting. "My thoughts are colors, my colors are tunes...", he wrote in his diary.

The concert program included famous works by outstanding contemporaries of the artist with truly generous melody and harmonious composition: "Elegiac Trio" No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Quartet in E major for piano and strings by Sergei Taneyev. They were performed by members of the David Oistrakh Quartet Andrei Baranov (violin) and Alexei Zhilin (cello), as well as violist Anna Serova from Italy and pianist Andrei Korobeynikov.

"Elegiac Trio" No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff was written in memory of P.I. Tchaikovsky and dedicated "To the Memory of the Great Artist." It was first performed in Moscow on January 31, 1894 by Rachmaninoff himself, violinist Julius Konus and cellist Anatoly Brandukov.

It took almost five years to create the quartet, Taneyev's first string ensemble with piano. It was completed in early December 1906. Only a year later, the quartet was publicly performed with the participation of the author in Moscow and St. Petersburg and was a great success.

In November 2025, the Tretyakov Gallery will open an exhibition of paintings by Viktor Borisov-Musatov.
