G. Mahler. Symphony No. 2. Pierre Boulez
Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony performed by the Berlin Staatskapelle, conducted by Pierre Boulez.
Mahler worked on the Second Symphony for almost 7 years, the first part was born in 1888. The next two parts were written in 1893, and the finale appeared in the plans in 1894, when the author heard a poem by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock at the funeral of conductor Hans von Bülow: "You will rise again, yes, you will rise again after a short sleep." They formed the basis for the finale of the symphony. For these lines, it became known as the "Resurrection Symphony".
This work was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It became his first major work in which he expressed his view of the beauty of the afterlife and resurrection.
The symphonic cycle was completed on December 28, 1894. And only a year later, on December 13, 1895, its premiere took place in Berlin under the baton of the author.
