Johann Sebastian Bach "St. John Passion"
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle and the RIAS Chamber Choir will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion. The composer is believed to have written the St. John Passion in 1722-1723. In the Passion, Bach adheres to the canonical gospel text, using chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel of John.
The composer wrote five Passions in total, but the scores of only two have survived - the St. John Passion and the St. Matthew Passion.
Currently, the St. John Passion is presented to the public exclusively in concert performances, but it was created as part of the liturgical canon. During Johann Sebastian Bach's lifetime, it was performed only in church.
