Dmitri Shostakovich, "The Fall of Berlin"
On Victory Day, the St. Petersburg Governor's Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Anton Lubchenko, presented the Russian premiere of the concert suite from Dmitri Shostakovich's music for the film "The Fall of Berlin."
The epic film became one of the top box office hits of 1950. The composer had worked on the score the year before. The film was screened numerous times abroad and received high reviews, and Shostakovich's work (along with the oratorio "Song of the Forests") was awarded the first-degree Stalin Prize. However, over time, the film was forgotten, as was the music written for it. Attempts to revive the score have been made repeatedly in Russia and abroad. The premiere of the concert suite for "The Fall of Berlin," edited by Anton Lubchenko, was performed at the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The performance is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's birth.
