La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra: Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky
The annual International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada is an event that is a real cultural landmark of the Spanish city. In 2023, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, presented symphonies of Russian composers Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky at the festival.
The Seventh Symphony was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1952 and became the composer's last symphonic work. This work was conceived as a "symphony for children", but then Prokofiev abandoned the original idea. "I called this symphony a youth symphony," he said later. The premiere of the Seventh Symphony took place shortly before the composer's death, on October 11, 1952, in Moscow under the baton of S. Samosud.
The Sixth ("Pathetique") Symphony by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is the composer's last symphony, the plans for which he had been hatching since 1891. In 1892, the symphony was completed, but the composer destroyed the notes, disappointed in what he had written. In 1893, he resumed work on the symphony, and within a few months it was completed. The first performance of the Sixth Symphony took place nine days before the composer's death, on October 16, 1893, in St. Petersburg under the baton of the author, but it was not a success. Recognition for this music came immediately after the composer's untimely death.
